Like A Man (2024)
Vintage WWII Advertisement, Toy Soldiers, Toy Planes, Glitter Butterflies, Nail Decals, Rhinestones, Lipstick, Fake Dollar Bills, Acrylic Paint

Throughout history, softness has been viewed as a very feminine quality.

Acting like there is one definition of strength, and attributing those qualifications to cis men, is harmful and untrue. Strength is not just having muscles and shooting guns. It’s being able to forgive, it’s navigating the world in loving way, it’s holding onto hope in a world that seems hopeless, it’s owning your authenticity and expression in whatever way you feel.

For this piece, I took objects and colors we associate with being soft (butterflies, rhinestones, lipstick, bows), and put them in an antiquated masculine environment (original vintage newspaper ad). I hope in turn it’s softening the idea of strength and “traditional" masculinity.

Beautiful Connections (2024)
Chalk, Acrylic Paint

Inspired by a falling out with a close friend.

In this painting, The Angel in the jar is trying to hold onto a love that doesn’t want them back (The Star). The Angel thinks if they keep themselves in the jar with The Star, The Star won’t leave them. The Angel can’t spread its wings from inside the jar, but The Star still shines for others through the glass. In the end it only hurts The Angel to hold onto a love that is limiting and not reciprocated.

The original title of this piece was “Shiny New Things”. I’ve gone through periods in NY feeling so disposable as a person. Like life moves so fast here and people come & go in a way that makes friendships feel interchangeable. It's a cycle we all contribute to and are victims of. Making this helped me make peace with those feelings.

Jesus Was Born In Palestine (2024)
Acrylic Paint, Paper, Gold Leaf, Deadstock Religious Charms

I was surrounded by a lot of different belief systems growing up, but the most prominent one was Filipino Catholic. I make a distinction from American Catholic, because they weren’t the same in my experience.

Although I’m no longer religious, my upbringing in faith was rooted in family, generosity, & togetherness. Jesus symbolizes an outpouring love for humanity, including our enemies. This means helping people in times of need. I only wish more people who believed these teachings followed through with them.

*History note: Jesus was born in Judea, which is Palestine today. At the time, neither Palestine nor Israel existed. To me this speaks to the evolution of cultures and religions that have existed in this region, and the violence that has accompanied it. https://donate.unrwa.org/-landing-page/en_EN.

Shellf Life (2024)
Air Dry Clay, Vintage Jewelry, Chains, Gold Leaf, Clocks,
Acrylic Paint

Shellf Life is a sculpture series taking hand picked shells, vintage & deadstock items, and giving them a new functional purpose.

The name is a play on words of materials used (a clock symbolizing time/life, etc), and is an observation of our societal attachment to objects and materials. We hold onto things until we pass them down, wear them down, or forget about them completely. All of the material (and non-material) things we surround ourselves with have a “shelf life”.
